Default Looking to buy FM6 seats - 09-13-2005 , 05:51 AM

We've maxed out our seats on our FM Server 5.5/FM 6 client setup (15
clients) and we need to add about five more seats.

Filemaker apparently is no longer in the bvusiness of selling anything but
FM 7 or 8 products. I cannot afford the money to upgrade server & all
clients, not to mention the time to go through the conversion process. FM
6 is exactly what our company needs right now.

Anybody know where to get some 6 seats? No bootlegs please, legitimate
serial numbers only.

Of you decide to respond direct, do not use this email address. Respond
to comground (AT) gmail (DOT) com only.

Thanks,

Steve Brown

Steve, you can still get FM6 install codes if you buy a Volume License
agreement for 5 seats of 8. I had a client do this just last week.

Call FM sales, tell them you want a VLA, and ask for the 6 install codes
to be included. If the regular sales number gives you a problem, call
the FM sales rep for your region.

Also, and I should have added this, if you already HAVE a VLA for an
earlier version, you can always add more seats of that version to the
VLA.

From memory, FileMaker Inc will still be selling FileMaker 6 licenses
until the end of 2005. Then they're going to look at whether customer
demand makes it worth continuing next year. (This was in the "small
print" at the bottom of one of the FileMaker 8 announcements
somewhere.)

Thanks Lynn, don't know why this didn't occur to me. I do already have a
volume license. I called them up and am now set with what I need. I
guess what spooked me is the total lack of info on the FM site about sales
of any sort of pre-7 product, whether boxes & CDs or extra license codes.

I asked the guy if 6 licenses were going to be discontinued soon. He said
he knew of no plans to do so. They don't often tell the salespeople who
answer the phones this kind of thing, though, but it looks like FM6
licenses are available from FM through the end of the year at least.
Stock up now!

Note my reply to Howard about trying to buy elsewhere than FM.

All but one of these URLs report that FM6 is "out of stock" (and they are
not likeled to get restocked from FM, Inc.) The fifth had a box with CD
they said was "Windows Only" whatever that means with the famously
multi=platform FM.

See my reply to Lynn. I got seats through my volume license. But
checking out the above tells me that not only is FM6 getting scarce, there
is a demand for it. Watch unopened boxes show up on eBay for $2,000.

I suspect there are a lot of small to medium businesses in my position.
I'm running a solution with about 80 files on FM Server 5.5, and 15 (soon
to be 20) clients. I have studies FM 7 extensively. I bought 7 Developer
and installed it up on laptop. I've studied the issues surrounding
conversion, read this group religiously and plan some day on investing in
FM Robot and MetaDataMagic and giving it a shot.

But as a business, I cannot afford the confusion and downtime related to
conversion. Nor can I afford to upgrade 20 seats and the server, much
less deal with retraining users. My FM 6 solution works perfectly, so the
only reason to go through the pain and expense is that FM 7 is "better"
and will allow for more flexible development in the future. Also, it is
actually supported by its manufacturer.

I'll bet there are thousands of people and companies just like me. We
will be lurking on the fringes of the internet, scooping up FM 6 crumbs
for years to come.
