Default iTunes Link? - 09-12-2011 , 01:15 PM

Hello

Is there a possibility that to link iTunes with FileMaker or Bento?

I wish to write some filters on my iTunes library. E.g. I wish to have
a list of all the movies by a certain Director.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

Cheers

You don't need FileMaker or Bento. Depending on your version of iTunes,
you can create Smart Playlists to group together all media with certain
user-defined characteristics ... BUT be careful with them, Smart Playlists
(as well as the Finder's Smart Folders and other "Smart" systems) seem to
be incredibly dumb. Form my very limited experience with them, if you
delete the Smart Playlist, it deletes all the objects within it!! You
first have to re-define the Smart Playlist with a garbage definition that
makes it empty, and then delete it.

All versions of iTunes in the last six years or more can do that.

First I've heard of such a claim. Deleting a playlist of any kind in
iTunes just deletes that playlist. I've done it frequently (including
deleting smart playlists) and never had the referenced items deleted
from the iTunes library.

Smart Playlists are just scripted search operations. You can't even
delete individual items from them. Same applies to Smart Albums in
iPhoto.

Smart Mailboxes in Mail and Smart Folders in Finder are slightly
different: you can delete individual messages or files from within the
Smart Mailbox or Folder, but again, deleting the Smart Mailbox or Folder
itself has no effect on the messages or files it has found.
