Default ISBN number check in Filemaker - 09-05-2005 , 08:26 AM

Hi,

I am looking for a way to implement a books database in Filemaker and I
would like to be able to automatically fill some fields (author, title,
...) by inserting the ISBN number and checking related informations in
some database on the web.

Could somebody help?

Regards

Stephane

It's a simple formula. I have it at home, while it should be documented
very well.

I used http://www.pruefziffernberechnung.de/I/ISBN.shtml for ISBN-10,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISBN (or better the de. option)
gives other descriptions.

It's interesting to see how many times the publisher's ISBN is
incorrect...

The check digit formula is simple and easily implementable in Filemaker.
I have a solution used for scanning book barcodes that will convert the
Bookland EAN code into an ISBN and vice versa (when needed).

However, I don't think that's what the original poster was asking. To me
it looked like Stephane would like to enter an ISBN, then use this to grab
title/author, etc. info from some web-based book database to populate the
Filemaker fields. If so, this will not be easy to do. The two largest
sources of book info are Amazon and Books in Print (Bowker.com). Both of
these are proprietary. They won't just let you link & grab.

Depending on budget and scale of operation, it might be possible to
subscribe to Books in Print and use it in this way. Amazon is another
matter. As far as I know, there is no complete freely accessible book
database on the web.
