Hi - I have been tasked to work with a custom designed FileMaker Pro 6 database with two files, one for contacts and one for organizationsand both are related to each other. I enter both contact and organization data in the Contacts file and the organization info is automatically entered in the Organizations file. I need to import into these files an Excel file where eachrecord has both contact and organization info. When I first made an import attempt. I discovered this was not easy. When I map the data between Excel and FM in FM, the organizationfields are missing from the field list. Unfortunately I don't have access to the documentation from the database designer on how to do an import with a setup like this, ifthere is one at all. How does one do an import with a setup like this? Thanks. |

The Organization fields don't exist there. Import pertinent data from the spreadsheet into the Contacts FM file, then do it again into Organizations. In the spreadsheet, there is likely no field corresponding to the relationship key between the two FM files. You would have to add a field to the spreadsheet and populate it accordingly before import, and make sure you include that one in the mapping for both imports. Otherwise you would have no related records between the two FM files. Matt |

What you say makes sense. What if the record I want to import is already in the FM? I'd be updating that record with the new info. Does it do a lookup first for info (such as a name) before creating a newrecord, if necessary? Thanks. On Jul 7, 11:37 am, Matt WIlls <I...
