Default Import Records Summary - FMP Server7 - 04-19-2010 , 01:25 PM

ok I'm just going to throw this one out there.

I have created a new GUI layout for an existing database which has
introduced a few new data entry fields to the database too.

When the database files were not in use by users I imported the most
up to date records to the new database layout. There were actually
around 60,000ish records in total 9I will archive some soon)!

The import record summary finallyshowed that it had imported the
correct number of records. However it did say: 'Felds' skipped due to
errors: 503

It would be really helpful to get a more detailed report showing which
fields were problematic and why, to help you try and correct them.
Does anybody know if there is a way; to find out the problem fields.
Next question: Before I proceed do you recommend I go live with my
new layout and imported records or is there a possibility it has
corrupted certain records.?!?!?

TIA
Jen

Hi, Jen -

I see no one's addressed your question yet, so I'll throw in a couple
comments:

1. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you created a new GUI
layout and then imported the records to the new database layout. Do
you mean you created a new file -- that is, a new database altogether
-- and imported one file into another? If you simply created a new
layout, then it wouldn't be necessary to import records. But if you
created a new file or updated an existing file, then the import would
make sense.

2. If you're using FileMaker Advanced, you can run a Database Design
Report on each file from the Tools menu and look for discrepancies
between the two files. In fact, you could probably even open up the
DDRs in Word and choose to compare documents, which would show you
where the two reports differ. This might turn up some of the errors
mentioned in the import summary.

3. With respect to going live with your new file (again, the term
"layout" in this context is confusing), I personally would not post a
database that I still had questions about. It would be better to have
your users continue with the old database until you're sure the new
one is working as needed, then re-import the latest data.

Hope this helps.

Best,
-J.

Hi

Thanks Jahn. Yes it is a copy of the original database file and I
suppose as well as slightly altering the original layout that users
are used to, my work also included adding new fields which would make
it a new database. I didn't think of that! I then attempted to
import records fom the original file into the new one.

I don't think it is Filemaker Advanced, it is Filemaker Pro. Server 7

Is there anyway I can still get DDRs using FMP Server 7? Is it
straightforward for me to compare DDRs? I have never done it before,
I suppose a lot of the problem would be I wouldn't know what I am
looking for, as in, in which fields the errors may lie.

Jen
