Default Images in FM Pro 10 database - 01-23-2010 , 05:56 PM

Hi all,

I'm running a custom flashcards database that I've created in FM Pro
10. I've got two questions regarding images that I've pasted into the
records (there are currently ~8,300 records, with ~1-2 images each).

I recently found out that the images I've been pasting in, which are
mostly screen shots (using cmd-shift-4-control) are around 1 Mb in
size each! This makes my whole db huge, something around 4 Gb.

1. It seems that there should be a way to quickly get quality images
in the db without letting the file sizes be so huge. Any ideas on how
to get screenshots into FM Pro containers (quickly, with a few
keystrokes would be preferred) in a size-conservative way?

2. Any way to compress the images I currently have? Maybe a plug-in?

Thanks!

1. I always use Photoshop (or something similar) to open images and
"save for web" (usually as a PNG file if I have transparencies, or else
as gif or jpg, whichever is smaller) before I bring them into FileMaker.

2. You can use the Media Manager plugin from New Millennium

Graphic Converter (Mac) is pretty good for converting images to almost any
format there is. It's a shareware application with a downloadable
almost-fully functioning demo, it nags you to pay on start up, and the onger
you don't pay the longer the wait for the nagging window to let you
continue. (I think you have to pay before you can use the batch processing
option and process mutilple images in one go.) http://www.lemkesoft.com

+1

if you want to convert your existing images in FMP, you can use an
Applescript between FMP and Graphic Converter.

Graphic Converter can save a compressed jpeg with size requirement.

I am not too impressed with the demo file that comes with the Media
Manager plugin from New Millennium. (I got the "Script cannot be found
or has been deleted"...)

How easy is it to have a script to through existing records and make
the images smaller?

I am looking for a pragmatic approach to have existing images scaled
to 3 versions: Original/big (for printing), Smaller (for web),
Thumbnail.
