Default Image container problems - 04-04-2007 , 08:02 AM

Hi all,

I've been using version 5.5 for a long time, and have come to the crunch
point where I have to upgrade to 8.5.

I'm getting stuck with several things though.

I've been happily using a custom web solution to date for our photo
catalogue, that displays my images using 'img' html code referring directly
to the storage location of the pictures. It works well and I like it. From
what I can tell though to convert the CDML pages not only do I need to use
the CDML converter tool (and hope it works), I also need to use Filemaker
Server AND have a separate web server. Previously all I needed was FM
Unlimited which ran as a web server itself. Am I right with all this?
Though I have FM Server, I don't have a separate web server, and arranging
to get access to one just for this database is daunting.

I don't want to loose these custom webpages, but it seems like converting
them and having all the software/hardware will be a major hurdle! So, I'm
looking at the possibility of using IWP. There seem to be a lot of
complications with images there as well though!

I've always stored images as a reference only. Otherwise I'd be getting into
the multigigabites rapidly. These are stored on a separate network drive,
backed up by our IT department. But it seems they don't display in instant
web publishing. I've tried moving the images into the web folder as
recommended (which I don't really want to do) and at that point the
containers do display. However one of the big gains I saw in upgrading to
8.5 was being able to populate my image container automatically using a
calculated value rather than inserting images one by one. I've now tried
this trick and it works really nicely, but even when the image address
points to the filemaker web folder, this doesn't seem to display in IWP.

Finally, in trying to populate my image containers automatically, I am able
to create an address along the lines of image:/h:/ArchivesImages/test.jpg
which works fine, however as I am on a network where people don't always use
the same drive letter I use the network address instead along the lines of
image://nghs01/files/ArchivesImages/test.jpg (Where //nghs01/files/ = h:/).
I haven't managed to get this to work, is there some secret to the syntax?
I've tried taking out and putting in various '/'s to no avail. I have used
this address to date for an open URL script that has worked flawlessly.

I'm determined that this updated to 8.5 will actually have some benefits,
and not just headaches.

Sorry - a whole bunch of questions - your answers, hints or suggestions for
any of them very much appreciated!!
