Default I'm new here - 03-09-2007 , 02:05 PM

Hi,

I'm new to this group. I don't know if I will stay, but we'll see. I
used to follow a fmp-group years ago, but somehow it stopped. I guess it
had to do with the fact that I stopped developing in fmp

I am Dutch. Live in the heart of the Netherlands on the border of a
nature-reserve called de Veluwe.
My skills in fmp used to be reasonable, but that was years ago (fmp 5).
Now I'm a bit rusty as I'm finding out.. :-(

My computer is a g4 mac digital audio (upgraded) with macox's latest
version.

I'm hoping you folks have the patience to deal with my prob. stupid
questions, as I said, I'm a bit rusty.

My first problem I want to post is prob. very simple (as I remember, it
was), but I seem to not be able to get it to work the way I want.

I want to build a relational db, in where I keep pricing-records of
shopping articles, articles in their different form and comparable
articles from different labels. also I want to compare pricing in
different shops with comparable articles.
f.e.
article A comes in 3 labels 1, 2 and 3,
article B comes in 4 labels 1,4, 5 and 6
(etc)

Also
label 1 has 5 articles A,B,C,D and E,
label 2 has 3 articles A,D, F and
label 3 has 3 articles A,C and G
(etc)
if I make a listview and make a new record, I want to have popups
showing only the related articles with their labels and vice.

somehow I cannot get this to work the way I want it.
so I need a little help.

Take a look at the Dynamic Value List demo at:

www.nightwing.com.au/FileMaker/demos4.html

I'm reasonably sure this is what you're looking for.

do you up quote or down quote in this group?

anyway, I took a look at the dynamicValues. this is very interesting,
but I cannot see that this is what I am looking for I think. Also I
haven't figured out yet how it works (took a brief look)

I also took a look at ConditionalValues. this is much closer to what I
mean, but I want a performer to play more then one instrument. I can go
arround that one by making a new record with the same performer. I
haven't tried it, but will the data not get confused?
Also I want to select from a dynamic list the musicians and instruments,
easily to add to and have them automatically sorted.

I'll play around with these a bit. Maybe I discover more.

Thanks

There will always be someone who posts at the top, no matter how many
times they're asked not to - usually because they're simply too lazy to
scroll down.

Or to set their usenet reader to answer down under. Which
not necessarily means Australia.

Actually, there are probably as many who would advocate top posting, so that the most recent post is available immediately, and you scroll down to review the thread as necessary, much in the same fashion as paper documents are filed in file folders: the most recent is put in front of earlier documents.

Either way, is there anything like a listmom who has some authority over the newsgroup, who might be able to add an instruction header to postings, even a link to a FAQ page somewhere? How are newsgroups created? Do they just spring up out of the ground?

Matt

Yes, but the ones who advocate for top posting are usually the same
ones who are too lazy to scroll down.

There are also those who advocate that you shouldn't quote previous
messages because they use a web-based newsreader that displays the
replies in a threaded fashion, meaning they see duplication.

Everyone has an opinion, BUT most netiquete guides say to quote what
you're replying to (trimming out anything unnecessary) and post replies
underneath the quoted text.

Whenever I reply to a top-posted message I always cut-n-paste it into
the "correct" order. I do the same with emails.

Basically newsgroups run on the goodwill of those who use them as to
what is and isn't preferred, and unfortunately there is often some
idiot who thinks they're the exception and can do whatever they like
(usually because they think they're anonymous, but they can be tracked
down if necessary) ... as with life in the real world, it's the moronic
minority that spoilt it for the rest of us.

Most newsgroups don't have any kind of "authority" (the main exceptions
being the "moderated" ones) despite some fool sometimes thinking
they're in charge.

Most newsgroups also don't have a FAQ, and those that do are often
unofficial since there's nobody in charge.

Most newsgroups are first proposed by someone and then other people
voting to have it created. The exception used to be the alt.*
newsgroups, but that too has been changed to stop idiots creating silly
newsgroups like alt.moo.moo.moo. \

Some newsgroups like the microsoft.* ones are controlled by the
appropriate company.
