Default IIS and Filemaker help - 06-20-2007 , 04:19 PM

Hi all,

I am new to the IIS and Filemaker animals. Here is my environment:

I have a dedicated Filemaker server (named: filemaker), on which I am
running Filemaker Server 7 Advanced on Windows 2K3. I am hosting 5
databases on the server and it is being used strictly internally
(intranet), so security isn't really an issue. Everything is up and
running and I can access the databases through the internal address of
http://filemaker/iwp/fmi/res/iwp_home.html. The problem is I want to
be able to hit the database by typing the address http://filemaker
without using a redirect. When I do this now, I receive the default
IIS page and it says it is under construction. If I make a new
default page in IIS and call it filemaker, what do I set the home
directory of the website to? Can I do that so the site is dynamic?
Can I just copy a directory over to the inetpub/wwwroot folder in IIS?
I've searched the Filemaker online support, but it isn't very
helpful. I'm sure it is a relatively easy fix, but I'm stuck. If
anyone has a better suggestion, I am all ears.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Why don't you want to use a redirect?

I would prefer to fix it using IIS to learn how to us IIS more
productively, instead of using a quick fix like a redirect. Thanks
for the posting.

Danny, it is a little off topic as it concerns more an IIS
configuration issue than a FileMaker query, but here goes:

1. Start the IIS Manager
2. Create a new website
3. Right-click the new website and select 'Properties'
4. Under the 'Home Directory' tab, select under 'The content for ...'
for the option 'A redirection to a URL' and type in for 'http://<ip
adress server>/fmi/iwp'
5. Next, clear out name resolving issues by adding an Entry for your
filemaker hostname into the DNS admin tool or use the hosts file in
your Windir/System32/drivers/etc/ folder
6. We now have to filter for the hostname 'filemaker' and point it to
the new web site. It will then invoke the server side redirect we
created in the previous steps. Right-click the new website and select
'Properties' again.
7. Under the 'Web Site' tab, next to IP adress press the 'Advanced...'
button
8. Select the IP adress and click the Edit... button in the top box
9. Enter 'filemaker' into the 'Host Header value' box.

While it will work, I'm not sure that this qualifies as a solution
that doesn't use a redirect.

Thanks for the quick posting Joreon. I followed the directions
exactly as you said and when I enter "http://filemaker" into a web
browser, it comes up with "Invalid Hostname (Bad Request). I have a
few questions then about the redirect.

1. When I specify the URL for the new website, I have three options:
The exact URL entered
A directory located below the URL

Thanks for the quick reply Joreon. Unfortunately I haven't been able
to access the server remotely since our cable provider decided to cut
our fiber line to that building. I followed your instructions exactly
and when "http://filemaker" is entered into an internet browser, I get
the message "Invalid Hostname (Bad Request)" even locally at the
server. I have a few questions about the redirect:

When I enter the URL in the Home Directory of IIS, I have three boxes
I have the option of checking:
-The exact URL entered above
-A directory below URL entered
-A permanent redirection to this resource

Do any of these boxes need to be checked?

Also, should I assign an IP address in IIS to the website, or should I
continue to use the "all unassigned" address?

Lastly, in the host file, I entered the FQDN of our server. The entry
looks like this:
10.6.116.245 filemaker.skokie69.k12.il.us filemaker
Is this correct? Should it be above the localhost entry?

Thanks for your patience and help in advance,
Dan
