Default How to get bold text on Preview - 12-22-2006 , 12:37 AM

I am new to Filemaker and I cannot get text to show bold on the Preview
screen. In the layout mode I can mark the text in a field as bold using the
Format > Text option and it shows the name of the field in bold. But when I
switch to the Preview mode, the text shows as plain. What is happening?

In Layout mode you set the text format of a layout field. The text in
this layout field is shown in this format only if it has no format of
its own. If the text has been formatted by applying a style to it, this
takes precedence.
A second possibility is that you just don't notice the boldness in
Preview mode because the effect is too subtle for your screen pixels.
Does it print as bold?

The best way around this (if you're really sure you want to reset the
data to the field's formatting) would be to find all the records and
then CAREFULLY use the Replace command from the Records menu using the
By Calculation option to replace the data in that field with itself.
ie.
Replace by Calculation
= SameField

Just make sure to read the Replace window carefully to make sure you're
replacing the correct field with the correct data ... it's ALWAYS best
to make a backup first.

Yep, this second one can often be a annoying problem, usually with
smaller size text. To save paper you can also zoom the preview to a
greater magnification and then you should see the bold text properly.

Changing the font to something else similar may also help.

A third problem which usually only shows up when actually printing the
layout is that you may be missing the Bold version of the font's family
from you computer. You may have "Normal", "Italic" and "Bold", but not
have "Bold-Italic" for example.

It sounds like the OP is formatting the field labels, not the field data. I
think this is just a matter of the font in question not being sufficiently
bold enough to reflect in Preview. When you go into Preview mode, the zoom
is reduced. So, to see the effect, simply zoom in.

Also keep in mind that beginning in FileMaker 7 and going forward,
calculations involving styled text preserve the text formatting.
