Default Highlight Colors - 08-04-2003 , 11:38 AM

How do you import a color or place a color into a Global Container field? I
took the MacAcademy 4-day course in Orlando a couple years ago, and I
remember this nice interface (using a portal as a filter) that was used and
explained. When you click on a portal row, that portal row highlights a
certain color because of the global field behind it. Details of the
highlighted row are then shown to the right.

I understand how all of the functionality works, I simply don't know how to
have the value of a container be a color.

I hope I was clear enough. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ed,

To use colour in a global container ...

Create a rectangle. Make the fill colour whatever you choose. Change
the line pattern and fill pattern to transparent (top, left square in
patterns). This rectangle can be very small. Copy it in Layout Mode
then switch to Browse and paste it into your container. Then the global
container field can be deleted off your layout - you won't need it again
unless you want to change colours.

Then create your calculation (container) and place that field in your
portal row - be sure to stay without the portal boundaries -
particularly the left upper corner. Change the graphic format to
unclick maintain ratio and change it to reduce or enlarge. This will
fill your calculation container with the colour.

just a small addition to the other answers on this. On a mac you can just click
the colour palette so that it expands, then use cmmd shift 4, followed by
holding control and drag select a small sample of one of the colour swatches
(or any other area of target colour for that matter). The key variations are in
mac system help (? screen capture). The key combo copies the selection to
clipboard, then just paste it into the global container. There is likely to be
a windoze equivalent.

Set the calculation field, the one that resides on the portal row, to enlarge,
and uncheck maintain proportions. Sizing as pointed out, needs to be just so.

As for how the portal row hilites, I usually use the script to set a global
(_hiliteID) in the related file, to the ID of the portal row record. The calc
in the related file that returns the colour (_hilite) is:
Case( ID = _hiliteID, GetRepetition(_hilite), 1)

What is the calculation field you are referring to? I thought he wanted to
put a global container behind the portal row? I understand how to do that,
but how does that turn on and off when the row is selected?

Sorry to be so dense.
