I work for myself sort-of-part-time (although many weeks are more like
nine-days-per-week) doing pretty much everything and anything on Macs,
it's just that almost all of my clients are either non-profit
organisations or individuals at home. Technically I am "for profit",
but realistically I'm more like "no profit" since I always undercharge
by far too much, or don't charge at all.

You're probably better finding someone closer to you since it's easier
to work via at least phonecalls if not visits ... plus I'm "stuck" with
FileMaker 4 and 5.5 on my own computer.

Thanks for the thought though. )

Thanks for you response Harry.

I am an individual that works at home. I just didn't want to ask for
freebie help.

Would you consider a project inexchange for a copy FM 8.5?

Unfortunately that wouldn't make any difference ... unless you're also
giving me a brand new Mac Pro with 30" Cinema Display to run FileMaker
8.5 on, plus of course a broadband Internet connection to send files
around with. ;o)

Part of the reason I'm "stuck" with older versions of FileMaker is
because my beige G3 Mac is still running Mac OS 9, so it can't run the
newest versions of FileMaker (or newer versions of Mac OS X for that
matter). Another part of the reason is that until recently most of my
clients were still running Mac OS 9 as well - the main one using
FileMaker already had FileMaker 5.5 which runs well in Mac OS X too, so
there was no need for them as a non-profit organisation to waste extra
money upgrading that (even at educational pricing it gets expensive
when you're talking about multiple licenses).

Sorry.

Errr... assuming you do mean me and not Renfer, then the email address
attached to this nickname is completely faked.

It's better to deal with FileMaker problems through the newsgroup, that
way other people can correct any mistakes I make and / or provide
better ideas. My answers should work with any version of FileMaker, but
they are by no means the only answer and there can sometimes be a more
efficient method using the abilities of newer versions of FileMaker.
This can be especially true when it comes to plug-ins - I try to avoid
or work-around those since they're often (over)expensive, making them
an unworkable solution for individuals and non-profits type of work I
mostly do.

Besides, being on a dial-up connection, an email won't get a response
from me any quicker than a message posted here would, and being here
someone else may well be able to give you a quicker answer before I
even see it. )

I hypothesize Helpful Harry is happy to have historic hardware, however
hobbled

We all know Macs have a longer useful life than PCs - I'm just trying
to set a record at 10+ years and get my money's worth. ;o)

It's far from "hobbled". At the moment, the only thing that is really
causing this Mac to show it's age (in terms of what I need it to do
personally and work-wise) is some of the fancier features on websites
that won't work, eg. things that need the newer Flash plug-in or the
newer version of QuickTime.

It runs FileMaker new enough to match my clients, it runs MSOffice,
DreamWeaver, Illustrator, and InDesign (albeit older versions again),
it also runs PageMaker better than newer Macs using "Classic" (which
although slowly swapping to InDesign I do still currently need).

Hi Harry,

some time ago you had provided a solution to a lack of lateral
perception with Dymo label printing at the time. Having lost the thread,
due very infrequent/irregular net time, I had tried your email. Now out
of context to the current thread:

<<
just to let you know the rotate fields worked fine. The obvious,
obviously escapes one at times.
After having a number of goes at it over a couple of months, and with
the secretaries really wanting it to work, the VERY day I got it
working there was an email from the Uni, stating that there had been an
issue re electrical safety with one (Dymo label printer), and that use
of all Dymo's was to be immediately stopped, and that they were all to
be collected and returned/collected (to supplier) for checking...

My second bit of information was a solution with regard to your apparent
lack of a current FM version.

I can't say I've heard of problems with them, but then I've never had
any need to use them either.

The only real solution is to upgrade this Mac. I have looked at doing
that on and off for quite a while, but it's expensive since I have to
upgrade the whol set-up at once thanks to Apple's switch from ADB /
serial / SCSI to USB / FireWire. That means an outlay of around
NZ$10,000. \

I could of course make up a website with lots of adverts and pop-ups,
and then reply to every question here with: "see my answer on my
website ...". That would add to my income. ;o)
There was some guy running a blog in the local newspaper this week who
uses website advert money as his income.
