Howdy - A client is having difficulty understanding how to set up FM Server 7 on his Windows network. Up till now, they've been using FMP 5 in multi-user mode, but since I've update their database for FMP 7, they'd like to follow my recommendation and get with Server. My main contact there is a bright guy who knows his tech stuff, but for some reason is having difficulty with the documentation. For my own part, I've always left the server end to the IT guys and don't know much about it, not to mention I'm primarily Mac oriented. Anyone interested in fielding a phone call for a five or ten-minute conversation with him? I think the mental block is more conceptual than technical. If you're able to help, feel free to shoot me an email off-list at my gmail account, adam.sugerman at the usual domain. Thanks in advance for any help with this. Best, -S. You need to run windows server 2000 or 2003 to be able to load and run |

N No. There is no reason to install a server OS unless you plan to make use of the server's additional features for their own sake. (IME, About the only server features you'd want for a typical FM7 Server box supporting a small business or department might be Terminal Services for Remote Admin; as you obviously don't want to be running any other servers or disk/cpu intensive services on the box.) As a platform for simple FM7 deployments, XP Pro is just fine. I've personally done this. But don't take my word for it: if you refer to FM's specifications, you'll see that its an officially supported option. Note, however, that you *do* need a Server OS to run the "advanced" components of FM Server 7 Advanced. (Near as I can tell the IIS MS bundles into XP Pro is just too crippled.) -regards, Dave I tried to run fm7 server and it insisted on windows server. I run fm7 |
