Default Help with value lists FMP 7 - 01-22-2007 , 08:52 AM

I have a database that has about 40 fields. I want each field to have
a dropdown list associated with it. I want that dropdown to be
populated via a relationship to that field.

I have a table with 3000 possible options where column 1 is the name of
the Filemaker field and column 2 is the possible values for the
dropdown of that field.

How can I build the value list so that it is associated with the field
name ?

Here is an example

Code Table

Car Type Toyota
Car Type BMW
Car Type Saturn
Fule Type Diesel
Fule Type Gas

Filemaker Fields

Car Type (Popup should only show Toyota, BMW or Saturn)
Fule Type (Popup should only show Diesel or Gas)

I don't see what's the problem. You can assign a value list to any of your
fields :
- if the value list is short and rather stable, you can define one by mean
of the FILE>Define>ValueList...
- if there are many values for a field and if they change often, it is worth
making a separate table for those items and use it as value list.

OK but how do I get the relationship between the name of the field and
the value list built ?

The table that I have is over 4,000 records. But those relate back to
just 40 fields. So that may be 100 per field or more.

Seems you don't need to create specific relationships.
Once you've defined a field as "Drop-down list' via the "Field/Control
Setup" panel, then appears the "Display value from" and you can select
"Define value list". On the appearing panel, clic on "New". You get an "Edit
value list" panel, on which you can check "Use values from field". You get
one more panel on which you can choose the target table and the field within
that table. That's all. Hope it helps.

OK, but if my table looks like this:

Car Type Toyota
Car Type BMW
Car Type Saturn
Fule Type Diesel
Fule Type Gas

How do I make sure that when I am on the field "Car Type" that only
Toyota, BMW and Saturn will show.
