Default Help! Permissions in Mac OS 10.4 - 06-23-2005 , 03:44 PM

Here I am again.

I am running FMPro Server 7 on Tiger. I use Retrospect 6.0 Workgroup for
backup.

To make things easier in my Retrospect scripts, I am trying to assign
the Documents folder under my username to be an additional FMPro
databases folder. I think I have successfully added it to the Folder
list in the server admin; at least it says I have a valid address.

I dragged my databases into it, then set the owner of Documents to be
fmserver and the group to be fmsadmin.

The databases either disappeared or are now not visible (same thing, I
guess). (And I have copies, so I'm OK if those are gone.) I can't put
anything into the Docs folder; it says that the file "could not be moved
because "Documents" cannot be modified." There is an Authenticate
option, but I am chicken to choose it since it then warns me that I
can't see the results of the action.

Yargh. I would be happy just to get my Docs folder back. What is with
this system of adding owners and groups anyway? After you add, say,
fmserver to the owner of a file, FMPro can see it but if you get info it
still says (original username) is the owner. If you have multiple
approved groups or owners, how can you tell?

I know there's a workaround in Retrospect. I can make the FMPro
databases folder, deep within the computer's Library, a subvolume. But
whatever else happens, I need my Docs folder back.

Thanks for any help.

Amanda, obviously not yet a Unix geek
