Default HELP File created on one Mac won't work on another Mac - 11-16-2005 , 06:13 AM

I have not used FM for many years (version 3 last).

I recently created a simple file on my Mac at home using FM7. I tested
it and it was working fine. I emailed the file to my Mac at work where
the file opens fine but I cannot add a record (that feature is dimmed).

Both Macs are using OSX.

Obviously some component is created a stored when initially creating a
database which is not transported with the file when emailing(?).

What must I do to get "transported" files working?

This question came up before and the thinking was that the email program
saved the attachment as "read only."

You can double check the file is write-enabled. You might also try to attach
the file as a .zip so the recipients don't have to go through that step.

LOL this reminds me of a time at a company party many years ago when a nice,
proper older woman was asking how they could distribute a file that was just
a little too big for floppies (yes, THAT long ago). I chimed in cheerfully,
and innocently, with "StuffIt!" which was *completely* misinterpreted! "Boy
was my face red!"

The problem with StuffIt is that they don't appear to do the Shareware
DropStuff application any more. There's only the free StuffIt Expander
or the expensive StuffIt Deluxe ... there's no DropStuff available for
download on their website. Apple used to include is as standrd on all
new Macs for a while, but they've stopped doing that too. (

The only real alternative to the full StuffIt Deluxe package is the
shareware application ZipIt which you can find links for at either
http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macorchard.com

As of 10.3, you can use the Apple "make archive" function to safely
transport such files. In fact, apple's specially packaged zips will
even bring along resource forks and other old-school mac flavor. Just
don't give them to PC people--they will be confused by the little extra
apple files that make it all work.

I've been using disk images. (.dmg) I not sure how good the compression
is compared to other formats, but its worked well for me, and seems to
follow where the industry is going with distributing osx files.

Support is built into OS X for both creating and extracting (mounting).

Mac OS X (newer versions only?) actually does have GZip built into the
OS as well, but it's not as obvious as an application you can see in
your "Applications" folder or on the Dock. )
