Oh, right, I forgot cross platform was the ojbective. But then stuffit
is hardly crossplatform in any practical sense either. For cross
platform, yeah, go with .zip.

I've been using disk images. (.dmg) I not sure how good the compression
is compared to other formats, but its worked well for me, and seems to
follow where the industry is going with distributing osx files.

Support is built into OS X for both creating and extracting (mounting).

Apparently I "forgot" that cross platform was the ojective because it
wasn't

"Re: HELP File created on one Mac won't work on another Mac" and dmg is
still my first choice for mac->mac, zip for cross-platform and pc->pc

It's an "unwritten objective" Dave

Because you KNOW in a week's time it's gonna be,

"Dear group -- Does anyone know of a way to read DMG files on Windows?"

Truth is there's no good reason to use a DMG with FileMaker because there is
no Mac-only data to preserve. Use zip (very cross platform) or StuffIt (Both
the compressor and free Expander *is* available for Windows).

DMG are "disk image" files are are appropriate for archiving binary
installation software on Mac OS X. There are no ways to decompress a DMG
file on any other platform.

If you're distributing Mac software great, use DMG. Otherwise best not get
into the habit using it for data files.

StuffIt is cross-platform. Windows users can download the free StuffIt
Expander or buy one of the full StuffIt versions from
http://www.stuffit.com/win/deluxe/index.html

Mac users can go to http://www.stuffit.com/mac/deluxe/index.html

The point i was stressing was more that it wasn't practical, not that it
wasn't cross platform.

Free or not, practically nobody in the windows world has stuffit
expander installed. And that makes it impractical as a good choice for
file distribution to 'windows users'. Although sure, in limited
controlled situations it could make sense... (although .zip probably
would still make more sense).

Just had to compress a runtime 37.6MB, the result were
- 10.1MB SIT file using Stuffit Delux 5
- 11.5MB ZIP file using "make archive"
- 12.9MB DMG file using Disk Utility
