Default HELP: A Central Menu page ? - 01-18-2007 , 01:05 PM

I'm new to the world of database. I have created multiple databases.
Can you create a central menu page that will access multiple databases
and all their layouts, setups etc?

I want somewhat like a kiosk of sort.

I want to be able work in and out thur a central page without closing
one and opening another database.

Thanks,

No reason you can't. You might find it less convenient than you're imagining.

Create a new file.

On one layout, create however many text objects as are necessary, each identifying one of your other files.

Define each as a button, with the single step "Open File." In the resulting dialog, you'll navigate to and select which file is to be opened by that button.

Seems to me it would be a whole lot simpler to just navigate to the file and open it, but that's just me.

You're right, in most cases, but in this one "database" wants to use
Kiosk mode.

BUT, a separate "menu file" is not really a very good idea. Among other
reasons it requires a double click to function - one click to activate
the window and another to activate the button.

In newer versions of FileMaker where you can have one file containing
all the tables, it makes even less sense.

A better approach is to use a navigation system like a website, where
all the buttons (or at least the main necessary ones) appear on every
file / table. As long as you make the windows for all the files the
same size and position on-screen (fairly irrelevant in Kiosk mode), you
don't have to bother closing files since simply opening another one
will cause it to appear to replace the current one by popping to the
top of the stack.
