Fields don't "auto-size" in FileMaker. What you have to do is stretch the fields to the maximum size you'll ever need and then set them (plus all the fields, lines, boxes, images, etc. below / right of them) to slide up / left using the Sliding option in the Format menu. This will cause the selected field to close any unused space, but you'll only see this happen when you print the layout or view it in Preview mode - Browse mode does not slide the fields. You'll also have to remember to turn on the "reduce size of enclosing part" when sliding up, unless you want each record to take up the same over-sized amount of space. I may add that you may have 2 different layouts : one for printing as said by Harry, and one for looking to the results before printing. This last layout will have a portal which is convenient for consulting but not for printing.
