Default FMP7 with Vista Ultimate (Black Screen) - 02-01-2007 , 01:38 PM

I have just updated to Windows Vista Ultimate and when I enter the
layout screen then try to select several fields by holding down the
left mouse button the entire screen goes black including the toolbars.
This is also causing the system's cooling fan to speed up as if it is
heavily using resources.

However, when you move the mouse as to select the fields, the selected
section becomes visible again.

As soon as you release the mouse button the screens returns to normal
and the fields are selected.

Please, no "shoulda boughta Mac" comments.

Thanks in advance,
Charlie

Sorry to offer no solution but... There is no current version of filemaker
that is certified to work with vista. Although it will probably work, any
number of glitches just might pop up at any time.

Filemaker had a lot of time to get ready for Vista, but they haven't provide
any solution as of yet. Unless they are working on a new version, they could
work together with the Filemaker community to test and report on any fixes
they may have. I'm sure most users in this forum are willing to cooperate
with Filemaker to get this issue resolved.

This is the only thing holding me back from getting Vista. I was gettting
very hyper about getting a Mac, but after what I had to go through at a
client's site troubleshooting an Apple Mail issue, I have decided not to get
a Mac, so Vista is my only choice for now (and Linux for a server .

There is a new version of FileMaker RUMOURED to be coming a little
later this year, and I would guess that is Vista compatible. We don't
know how much time FileMaker has known about Vista, in the sense of
details or testable versions. It wouldn't surprise me if FileMaker only
got a version of Vista a couple of weeks before it's business release
near the end of last year.

The reverse happened with Microsoft's VirtualPC when Apple released Mac
OS X. It took them over a year to release an updated version that
worked with the new OS. We're still waiting for Intel versions of
Adobe's Mac applications.

When a new operating system is released it will ALWAYS break some of
the old software and it takes time for other companies to catch up.

My guess would be you were troubleshooting a Mac having rarely done so
before. I suffer the same problem every time someone asks me to "fix"
their Windows PC because I try very hard to steer well clear of Windows
- it takes me ten times as long and I find it irritatingly difficult
(for example, Windows Defender was playing up recently displaying a
VERY unhelpful error message. The reason turned out to be an expired
beta version, but why couldn't the error message say that!?!).

People simply get used to what they been using. Most "switchers" soon
get used to the Mac OS and refuse to go back to Windows. Some of course
give up for whatever reason.

By coincidence, this item turned up on Slashdot.org today ...

Windows Expert Jumps Ship
-------------------------
An anonymous reader writes to let us know that Scott Finnie,
Computerworld's Windows expert, has given the final verdict
to Windows after three months of using a Mac. And the verdict
is: "Sayonara." Finnie is known to readers here for his many
reviews of Vista as it progressed to release.

Quoting: "If you give the Mac three months, as I did, you
won't go back either. The hardest part is paying
for it - everything after that gets easier and
easier. Perhaps fittingly, it took me the full
three-month trial period to pay off my expensive
MacBook Pro. But the darn thing is worth every
penny."

I was running out of online time last night so didn't do that. )

There was also http://www.makeashorterlink.com , but evidently that's
now been "acquired" by TinyURL anyway.

There's no doubt many others too.
