I am very new at FileMaker and I need a little help. I got a copy of a FMPro database from a friend. I have all the passwords necessary to use it. However, although I can open the database in FMPro7, and I can enter/save values in various fields, I cannot edit the various records and forms, thus I assume they were protected some way. Whenever I open the database, most menus in FMPro become non-functional (this includes the edit, format, records, scripts, etc). That would be fine, but here is the problem: One of the forms has a field which contains the IP address of the computer this database file was initially destined to work on, but whenever I try to change this IP with the one from my computer, I get a message that the field is "not modifiable". The purpose of this IP is to allow other users to communicate with the database from their computers. If I open the file on my computer (different IP), users get an error message. Thus, would it be possible in any way to de-block that field, so I can change that IP address? I have Admin and User passwords, but regardless which one I use, the IP cannot be edited. Thank you in advance! |

There are more then one possibilities. 1. The field you see is a calculation field. You have to find out which other field(s) this calculation uses and put those orriginal fields on the layout. 2. The field itself is locked. Go into layout mode. Right click -> select Field Behavior. A dialogbox appears. First sentence reads: Allow field to be entered: Switch the first checkbox ON (in browse mode) 3. The field has some storage - or entry-option set. Goto Define fields. Locate your field. Click the button options. On the first tab, there should be no checkboxes active. (You don't see any ticks (check) in a checkbox.) On the second tab you see one radio button active and one checkbox. Both are above the first line. Other tabs are not needed for now. By now you should have found the solution, unless I am forgetting the obvious..... :-)) Ursus |

The database appears to be protected, in such a way that most menus are "disabled". I cannot go to layout mode, as it is disabled, along with find, browse and preview submenus. Also disabled, is the "define" submenu, along with import, export, and other submenus. If there is an alternative solution, that would be great...Thanks much. |
