Comment/Observation:

Terrific that FileMaker 8 now supports underlining typing mistakes. Not so
terrific this cannot be turned off on a field-by-field basis for the many
situations where a field contains alphanumeric codes that will not be in any
dictionary.

Well, we need SOME reason to upgrade to FM9, right?

Frankly, I've found a number of these sorts of quirks. For example:
- Can't turn spelling on/off even on a per-layout basis;
- Can't turn "spelling as you type" on or off via script
- File options are only available to accounts with full access...I
should have the ability to script things that limited access users can't
access (including how to treat downloading photos from cameras);
- Can't script the ability to show/hide toolbars (only whether to allow
them to show or not...not exactly the same thing).

There are also parsing errors during conversion from FM5/6, such as:
- complex not IsEmpty portions of field definitions and conditional
scripts often aren't parsed correctly, resulting in incorrect
parenthetical groupings (I've been stung by this dozens of times);
- In Custom Message boxes, if you had a plain old carriage return (ie,
no character entered, but just hit the return key) from FMP5/6, FM7/8
parse the expression and automatically and incorrectly enter the
paragraph symbol without the required quotes and ampersands.

I'm still discovering things like this. Hopefully FM9 will fix them
(although a free update called FM8.0.1 or something should do so).

You can script it to check as many fields as you need and skip the ones you
don't want to check.

Yes, but this is not the same as having the spiffy underline appear (or not
appear) during data entry, under developer control. This option is always on
or always off, for all fields and layouts in the entire file.

This is a new option in FileMaker 8 (Claude deleted FM8 from the subject
line).
