in fm8 is it possible to have a portal filtering as you are typing into the filter. In other words the more letters you are entering for last name the more the found set is automatically constraining in the portal or do you have no choice but to exit the field to see results. If this is still not possible any other next best suggestions other than the old way of the big calcs in fm6. thanks in advance, P.L |

Not to my knowledge. The problem is not the calculation logic (actually setting up the relationship filter is quite simple) but the trigger to refresh the filter key values. This can't still be done in 8. I am currently developing a solution for a customer which uses a Quicksearch portal that auto-refreshes. I was developing it until now in FMP7 and I used the SecureFM with MenuMagic plug-in from New Millenium Communications (http://www.newmillennium.com) together with the *Clairvoyance* technique as implemented by NightWing Entreprises (http://www.nightwing.com.au/FileMaker/Clairvoyance/). Shortly described: the technique traps all keyboard keystrokes on the Quicksearch layout, triggers a script to refresh the filter key values, and appends the trapped characters matching the keystrokes to the filter field. It works well and smooth in 7 but not in 8. Right now, New Millennium Communications has not released an update of their plug-in for FileMaker 8. HTH Jeroen Aarts "P. Have to buy a third party software package for this. You can spend tons of money and before you know it your would be better off with a decent database. Especially if you are in a medium or large group. Only will work with one instant of fmp. If you have others with u, have to buy extra copies.... -- Bill KI4HPZ "P.
