Default FM8.5 Newbie question w/Value Lists - 11-24-2006 , 10:25 AM

Hi...

I have a question regarding value lists.
I have a field which can have values 1,2,3.
Right now, a value list pops up and a valid selection can be made.

Want to change this so instead of 1,2,3, they get valid descriptions,
X, Y and Z instead.

So...I do the following:
1. File->Define->Value Lists
2. Define a new value list, called XYZ and set the Custom Values to X,
Y and Z.
3. OK
4. File->Define->Value Lists
5. Choose New
6. Select Use Values from Field
7. Select database name
8. Select correct field to map to the description

Now the question: when I select Also Select Values from Second Field,
the XYZ I created in the first 4 steps above doesn't show up.

I have no idea why.

Can someone explain to me where I've gone wrong?

TIA,
Joe

Joe,

By replacing the values in your value list, you only have done just that.
The values in the field are still the same values you have originally
entered. The value lists only serve as a quick and uniform way of entering
the data. The fioeld is nothing else as a normal texfield. You now have to
enter the field on a layout withou its value list attached to it. Then you
have to replace your old 1,2,3 values with the new XYZ values. Using a
common replace. But to be sure I would use an intermediary field. Then you
would be able to fall back if anything did go wrong.
