Default FM Service 3.0 on a XP Professional - 06-10-2005 , 09:43 AM

We've been running FM Server 3.0 on a NT 4.0 for years - very good. The
FileMaker server is running as a service which host about 50 .fp3 files.

I installed the FM Server 3.0 on a XP Professional (SP2) box and the service
started up with no problems. I copied over all my .fp3 files and client can
see the files on the new FileMaker server.

However, when a client open it up only a few files open and then FileMaker
4.1 (this clients all have 4.1's) just feezes.

Now XP Pro has a 10 user connection limit but I think that only pertains to
CIFS connections and not TCP/IP connections which FM Pro uses. Without
upgrading, does anyone have any ideas on how to get this running under XP
Pro like it does with NT 4.0?

If this doesn't work, is a server product for linux still available that
will host .fp3 files?

Thanks,
-Eric Wood

From what I have gathered TCP/IP Connections do pertain to the
connection limit. Also it might not be the xp connection, it could be
the version FMServer 3.0 running on an XP box. Did you have it running
on NT 4.0 Server, because XP Pro may not run the old server version
correctly or even the new one. I know the filemaker client may work
with xp but the server version might not, especially one that old. Also
are the clients running XP pro, check the firewall and make sure it is
not blocking anything the filemaker clients may need to connect to the
server. Another question, shouldn't the server version be the same as
the client version, I thought the versions of filemaker pro and
filemaker server are the same?

Yes, FM Server 3 server runs great under NT 4 and the service even starts up
with no errors under XP Professional. So that's want led me to believe I
could replace my NT 4.0 box.

FM Server 3 hosts .fp3 files. The Filemaker 4.1 clients are all .fp3
compatible. There was no fp4 standard. FileMaker 3 and 4 are essentially
the same.

I was really hoping to host .fp3 file on XP without buying the server. And
even then, I wouldn't know if it would work on XP 2003 server.

Our your clients connection to the fp3 files through the filemaker
server or through using regular file sharing because through the file
share they may be limited to how many can use the one file. Also have
you checked the firewalls on the xp boxes, if they are on you may have
to open some specific ports, sorry but I cant remember what ports they
are.
