Default FM server 8, trouble with file permissions - 05-04-2007 , 12:52 PM

My client installed FM server 8 to host a small Mac network with a
single database. Until now, the DB has been hosted with a regular
version of FMP 8, without any difficulties. I moved the DB into the
proper folder in /Library for FM Server, and it is available to
clients on the network through fmapp remote hosting. But once opened
by a client, even one with [Full Access], the file is not allowing any
editing. I'm assuming this is a question of permissions?

I read the booklet accompanying the software, and changed the
permissions for the DB as directed. I also used NetInfo to add the
users to the fmserver group, in the hopes that was the problem. But
it's still not allowing editing. All users have privilege sets which
allow access through fmapp and fmiwp.

Can anyone help?

And while I'm at it, I get a message while opening the DB with FM
server, that the file can't be served over the web because the plug-in
is not installed. And in the documantation it's not clear to me where
the plug-in is or how it is installed. There are no plug-ins
available in the Plug-Ins tab of the Server admin window.

thanks,
Lanse

You need to have FM Server Advanced to serve databases over the Web.

You might know about this one already, but in case you don't: There's
a little trick you have to do when you open a shared DB. In the Open
Remote dialog box, make sure your users highlight the DB file, then
hold down the shift key when they click "OK". That brings up the
logon window for users to authenticate with username and password.

And I think the protocol for hosting with FM Server is fmnet.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wolf,
The client reinstalled the software on a different machine today and
the files are now showing up correctly and are editable. Not sure
what was going on there. They also discovered the issue with FM
Server basic edition and Web publishing. I guess they'll have to get
the additional module to allow the web interface. It seems odd to me
that standard FMP allows both network and web serving of files, but
they crippled the Server version of the software which is purchased
solely to serve files!
In any event, thanks for your response and for that tip on the opening
remote files... I didn't know that and I'll take advantage of it!
