We just bought Server 7. Can't get the auto backup to work, because we need to back up to a remote server. Even with the server mounted, the path is not recognized as valid by FM. Tried an alias and a direct path to the folder. No luck. Anyone have a solution or work-around? |

Not a big deal though its trivial to have the remote server mirror the backup folder on the FM7 server. |

Could you elaborate somewhat on some better ways to do it ? |

You could do something more exotic, but a batch file would suffice. ![]() Could you elaborate somewhat on some better ways to do it ? Some approaches that might be appliable: In windows you can use Task Scheduler to run a batch file ("Scheduled Tasks" under "Performance and Maintenance" control panels in XP elsewhere on other versions.) periodically. If the remote server is linux you could use "cron" to run a batch/script from there. For that matter cron works with OSX too, or you can set up a repeating event in iCal to run a batch file or applescript. Or... use any dedicated backup software that lets you schedule backup of a remote folder or perform folder mirroring. Or you could set up a sheduled FTP transfer using any decent ftp program. -regards, Dave |

I've decided to do it as a two-step process - get FM Server to create the backup file, and then use a simple applescript/iCal event to copy that backup folder to the remote server. But if anyone from FMaker is listening, it seems to me that only allowing the creation of a backup on the same drive is like having a second safety deposit box in the same bank. If the bank burns down, it doesn't matter if your valuables are in one box or two -- they're all toast. ;-) |
