Finding network printers -

Filemaker 6.0, Windows XP
I have multiple users logging on to different workstations, then
accessing a system shared via Filemaker server. To try and keep
things working as intended, I purchased the "Change Printers" plugin
and everything works right as long as the user has the intended
printers in their profile on that specific machine.
I've worked out a method to first determine if this is the case, but
is it possible to reach out and connect to a printer that isn't
installed?
I did a test run using the Open URL script step and the error code
changed to indicate that the printer was connected, but it still ain't
there.
I guess I'm looking for a script step that will find a printer on the
network given the specific printer name, then connect to it so that I
can print to that printer.
Upgrading to a different version of Filemaker isn't an option, since
my employer controls what software we get to use. By the same token,
I can't control printer installation in every profile, because many of
the users already have profiles AND I can never be sure who will be
logged in where.
Thanks for any help (or sympathy),
Ben Blue
