Default FileMaker Server 8 Helper Service Error - 05-22-2007 , 05:29 PM

I'm unable to start the Helper service. An error dialog appears, which
reads, "Could not start the FileMaker Server 8 Helper service on Local
Computer. Error 1003: Cannot complete this function."

The server is running Windows Server 2003, sp1. All of the minimum
hardware requirements are exceeded, and it's a new box with no other
applications installed except antivirus. Windows Firewall is turned
off, so the ports are not blocked. Also, I did a test install on an
old development desktop, and was able to run FM Server and host a
database successfully, so I'm fairly certain the installation/
configuration was done correctly.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas? Thanks.

Check the event log to see if you can find anything there.

I'd also try a complete uninstall/reinstall, purging the stuff in the
registry that gets left behind.

Otherwise, it sounds like a permissions issue. Is the server part of a
domain? Did you modify or apply any non-default security templates?

-regards,
Dave

Just the "service failed to start" boilerplate message.

Tried that. No luck, but more on that later...

A critical piece of information I overlooked--I'm using a "build
image". After setting up a new installation from Microsoft DVD, the
problem doesn't happen. Unfortunately, I have to use the standard
image in production, but fixing the problem should just be a matter of
figuring out which build setting is screwing me up. Thanks for the
input!
