Default Filemaker Project Linking Tables-Help Needed - 12-12-2005 , 12:03 PM

I am fairly new to developing filemaker applications but I am giving it
a try for my Testing Company.
Right now we have three seperate, unrelated database files. These files
are: Project Information (Project Name, Project Number, Contract
Amount, etc), Contact Information (Last Name, First Name, Phone, etc),
and Testing Procedures (Date of Test, Test Description, Open/closed,
etc). I have joined three files into one common database but here is my
problem:

I need to be able to link one project number with multiple contacts and
have multiple test procedures. I have tried using a primary key for all
tables but can't seem to get one project number to "follow" multiple
entries for contacts and test procedures.

I would also like a way to switch between project numbers easily and
only show the related contacts, and test procedures.

Any tips and help would be appreciated. Hope I have made sense in my
explanation.

Thanks,

Bill

Properly defined relationships will, as you put it, "follow" through
the entire relationship map, but it won't happen automatically in old
records in which no relationship existed previously between any files.

What you have to do is come up with match fields in each of your files
that do, in fact define a relationship to one or more of the other
files.

As standalone files (and now, if I understand correctly, three tables
in a single FM file), how do you know what project belongs to what
client, what procedure belongs to what project?

I assume that Project Information has something that identifies what
client the project belongs to, which may be your way of linking it to
the Contact Information Record. Similarly, there has to be something in
Test Procedures that identifies what project it belongs to. Start there
in creating your matches.
