Default Filemaker Pro 8.5 Status area question - 03-20-2007 , 02:22 PM

Hi there,

I am just wondering if there is any way to modify the status area of FMP
when in Browse mode. The only thing I want to see in there is record
navigation and record status information. In addition, is there any way to
lock down the database/layouts etc to prevent inadvertent or otherwise
modifications to the overall structure.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Regards,

Sue

Nope. You could hide and lock the side bar, but then you would need to
recreate all the features you want (or something similar at least) with
your own fields, scripts, etc.

The usual way to do this is via the Privileges / Passwords,

BUT
you have to be careful you set these up correctly otherwise you can
accidently lock yourself out of the file completely.

Usually you would define two passwords:

Developer whatever password you want and has
FULL access to the file

User sometimes simply a blank password
or anything you want which has a
limited access - no Layout mode,
no Define Fields, etc.

You can then set the Preferences for the Document to always try the
User password on opening the file so that users don't actually have to
type it in each time.

For you to get access you have to hold down the Option key (on the Mac)
or Shift key (on Windows) while opening the file. Then you can type in
a passwrod giving you full access.

You would have to create your own status area with scripted buttons and hide the built-in. You can make it look and act quite similar to the original, with the possible exception of the slider under the Records book. Record Number, Found Count, etc. are all simple to do.

Take a look at User Accounts and Privileges in Help.

Make sure you don't lock yourself out. Save a copy before you do anything.
