Default FileMaker Pro 8.5 Share Question - 01-30-2012 , 05:41 PM

(Yes, I know about FileMaker's forums)

Here's the situation:

We have a set of FileMaker .fp7 files that were created years ago by
someone who is retired and living outside the U.S.

One file has a share, and ***ALL*** files are on a local folder on my
WinXP SP3 desktop.

Every time I open the main file I get an error saying something like
'cannot open share because Network Share is disabled.'

THE FILES ARE NOT ON THE NETWORK! They are all in the *same local
folder*. Enabling Network share fails, so that does not fix the
problem.

So why this error?

Note that operation on these files are not affected, I can
edit/create/delete.

You can turn sharing off by first having all related files open, then
going to the File menu > Sharing > FileMaker Network. Select all files
on the left and then mark "No Users".

And?

Every time I open the main file I get an error saying something like
'cannot open share because Network Share is disabled.'

THE FILES ARE NOT ON THE NETWORK! They are all in the *same local
folder*. Enabling Network share fails, so that does not fix the
problem.

So why this error?

Enabling Network share should do the job. So how does it fail?
DUH, dialog just says it fails. No explanation. But again, NONE of
the files are on our network. They are all in the same folder on my
desktop system, all local.

The problem is FileMaker sees a network-share when should not be.

You say it's the main file. What does file - opening each file to all
users?
The main file has fields from a second file, so both files open at the
same time. Opening the second file alone has no problem.

My problem is I don't understand HOW FileMaker shares fields from 2
files. Especially since I did not make the DB in the first place.

Could be a user definition thing, could be a password thing, could be
something else.

Not a password problem. Every file automatically opens using the same
password.

The answer is within the missing information, I assume.

Thanks for the reply.

Network sharing isn't anything to do with sharing fields between files
(that's just FileMaker's relational functions) and it's not really
relevant where the files are stored (locally or on aother computer /
server) - although if stored on another computer you should not be opening
them directly.

Network sharing is to allow multiple users to access the files at the same
time and is independant from the computers network's own sharing
protocols.

My guess would be that the database file(s) has at some stage been set-up
for multiple users. There may be a script that is trying to turn on the
file sharing, and / or the FileMaker Preferences may not be set to use a
sharing protocol.

Did you ever actually enable Sharing?

Your answer now may imply that you never tried to activate it.
Take Harry's approach to disable it for the files.
You don't need it.

But did you ever open the sharing setup?

On Mac it's File > Sharing > FileMaker Network...
Network Sharing off ( ) on (*)

Did you read my comment above? When I try to turn it on IS when I get
the error that it fails.

Because someone some time defined to use sharing for one of the files,
and now the application warns you to enable sharing.

You should know about the garbage in - garbage out problem. The better
the information that you provide, the easier it is to help.

OT: You guys need to start including the thread.

Like "Take Harry's approach to disable it for the files" does not help
much if you don't include what "Harry's approach" was.

Martin meant to say "take Howard's approach" (apology accepted ;-),
where I said:

going to the File menu > Sharing > FileMaker Network. Select all files
on the left and then mark "No Users".

A dialog for me is somethin where I can enter yes or no, or just "ok".
I dialog will appear when you open the files, since sharing is not yet
enabled.

First, a "dialog" in Windows OS is an interactive object opened
*within a normal app-window* (including your win-desktop which is a
special window). Usually from a menu option or from a Toolbar icon, or
a message from the app. It may, or may not, have an [OK] button
per-say, but will always have some way to close it.

I do wish to thank all who replied with suggestions.

*The one that DID work* was from Harry (?). The one that said I had to
set [X] No users.

Again, thanks.

But a comment of FileMaker v8.5, the need to set "No Users" when you
already have Network sharing Off is really dumb. If the coders for
FileMaker were thinking *logically*, setting Network sharing to Off
should have AUTOMATICALLY set "No users" OR have Filemaker ignore
(gray-out) the users options.

No, no. It was from Happy Howard, not Helpful Harry ;-)

I agree with your comment that this particular dialog is a pain in the
bum and completely unnecessary. I'd recommend either:
- post a "feature request" to
http://www.filemaker.com/company/con...e_request.html
- or post it as an issue here:
