Default ** Filemaker Pro 6.0 and Scriptmaker ** - 04-02-2007 , 06:02 PM

I have tried searching for the answer to this in this group, other
websites, and the FAQ (which seems to be old) but haven't found any
solutions.

We have a database application that we purchased ($500 I believe) that
was built with Filemaker Pro 6.0
and distributed as an .exe. We also have the full version of
Filemaker Pro 6.0v1 installed though.
The database developer has locked out the Scriptmaker menu option
(grayed out) because he said that he doesn't want to have to
troubleshoot that. We have some tedious repetitive tasks though that
scriptmaker would be ideal for though and are trying to find out if
there is a way to bypass those security restrictions.
I can understand the developer's desire to not troubleshoot something
that someone else created. That's fine.
We weren't planning on calling him. We just want complete access to
the program we paid for with our data with the full version of
Filemaker pro that we have installed.

Under the File menu, Access Privileges is not even listed and under
Scripts, ScriptMaker is disabled. We really need to be able to edit
scripts. The developer said they would be willing to generate a
script to do what we needed but for $200. This is expensive
considering that I can generate the same script in other FileMaker
databases in 2 minutes and even if we did pay them, what if we needed
modifications to the script in the future?
It would be costly and time consuming for simple changes and it just
isn't something we want to do.

Is anyone aware of a way to unlock ScriptMaker or can suggest a
workaround (besides paying the $200 fee)?
Cheers.

Robert

Export your data, open it in your own FileMaker file, and generate
whatever report you need.

Or else see if you can create a new FM file and build a relationship to
the locked file. You may be able to figure out a way to modify the data
in your locked file through the relationship from the new file.

In FM8, it is possible for the developer to allow editing of some
scripts while not allowing editing of any pre-existing scripts. The
developer didn't have this option in FM6 and I can't blame him for not
wanting to open it up.

If you are that good at designing scripts then why didn't you design your
own database and have full access?

Otherwise, pay the developer a reasonable fee for his time to change the
design. You essentially have an end-user license agreement just like buying
Microsoft Word etc. Microsoft is not going to give you access to their C++
code... same applies to the database file.

Microsoft uses C++?!?!?!?
I thought they used Logo to write their applications. ;o)

Basicaly you get what you paid for. If the contract says you have an End
User License Agreement (or something similar) then the creative rights
remain with the developer. Which is a normal contract. Any other extras
would have to be agreed on beforehand. My guess is that your developer
wouldn't have developed this solution for the price you have paid if you had
said you wanted complete access afterwards.

There is no way to unlock scriptmaker. If there was a way it would make
FileMaker very vulnerable.

I would go with the option of rebuilding it yourself. For $700 ($500 buying
and $200 extra) you could easily work out how many hours you could spend
yourself. Just for the sake of it: say you earn $50 / hour. You could work
12 hours in a new solution, which doesn't sound unreasonable. Then you would
have your own version and could change it any way you wanted.

Keep well, Ursus
