Default FileMaker and port 5353 - 10-02-2005 , 03:12 PM

Hi,

While configuring a firewall (Window environment) this morning, I noted some
UDP traffic on port 5353. I figured out FileMaker 8 uses multicast DNS
(MDNS) on port 5353 to discover FileMaker hosts on the network.

The MDNS protocol is used in the concept of Zeroconfiguration Networking
(Zeroconf, also advertised as 'Bonjour' by Apple), to easily discover
network devices and services. It is aimed to be the successor of AppleTalk.

I mention it here because - in times of so-called *personal firewalls* -
sometimes it may be of use to open port 5353 for MDNS, to let FileMaker
hosts automatically appear in the "Open remote" Dialog box.

As a sidenote: the FileMaker Knowledge Base does not contain information
about this topic

I meant "Windows" not "Window" in the first sentence, though the firewall
seemed to have a big window ;-)
