Default Filemaker phones home?? - 06-15-2005 , 03:05 PM

I have an issue going on with FMP 5. Have posted before with no luck.
Trying again. On starting up, before or as password window appears, my
firewall, Zone Alarm posts an alert that FMP is trying to contact the
internet. The destination is odd and always... 255.255.255.255:47444.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I sell runtime solutions built with
Dev5 that do this exact same thing. When ZA doesn't splash an alert it
can most always be found in its log. Not absolutely every time it opens
but 5-10 times a day. A couple of users have asked about this........
to my consteration. Web Companion is not enabled.
Thanks,
Bill

There is likely an external IP address as one of your solution's file
references. These will often show in scripts as an IP address on
Perform Script [External], Open[] and some other srcipt steps. Or there
might be some relationship or value list that references an external
file (even though you might not realize it).

The best thing you can do to see your file references in FM5 is to use
Metadata Magic <http://www.newmillennium.com/> to expose and fix those
references.

Thanks Howard,
Are you saying that just references are picked up on file opening even
though they have yet to be called?

I'm thinking about any scripts that are set to automatically run on
open. I'm also thinking about any fields that are on the initial
layouts, which are related to external files.

One other thing -- if your files are set to be shared as 'multi-user'
then there might be an effort by Filemaker to make those files
available. Not sure on this, though.

In article <11b1lhejg06svf1 (AT) corp (DOT) supernews.com>,

For starters "255.255.255.255" is a special "broadcast locally" address.
and doesn't get routed to the "internet"... so your completely safe from
any fear that its calling home. Its just sending out a hello to the LAN.

What's it doing on the LAN?

Well... for one thing FM often checks for other copies on the LAN using
the same license code and complains (for non-VLA licenses at least).

It may also be trying to prefetch and cache databases that are currently
hosted on the lan.

I concede neither of these behaviours are relevant for a bound runtime,
but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that these behaviours are just
inherited from the FM codebase and nobody thought to strip them out
because they aren't relevant anyways.

Thanks Howard,
There are some things that happen on open but since the alert appeared
before a password was entered there was a suggestion that it was the
application itself. See 42 below.

Thanks 42,
I thought the address looked pretty "in house". That gives me something
definite to reassure users with.
