Default Filemaker <-> MySQL - 05-30-2007 , 09:10 AM

I have a need to move data from FMP to a MySQL datebase, and also
move some other data back.

How have other people done this? Is there a procedure someone has
written and submitted for open use?

Not really -- not until Filemaker 9 comes out (so we are led to
believe).. There are a few proprietary solutions, but none of them
are cheap. One of them might work for you; I haven't tried any of
them so I can't comment on them.

What you can do is export/import using dedicated layouts and a
standard data format, such as CSV. It's a bit clunky but it works. It
helps to have a really good SQL front end, too. FMP <-> MySQL is
something I've become pretty adept at; if you want, email me privately
and I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Hope this helps

I use some perl scripts to create dummy sql commands from a tab
separated text file and to convert from sql commmands to text.

Thanks. I was not clear. I don't want to link the databases as
if they were one; we have two databases for data security reasons
as well as simplicity. [The databases are in different states...]

But we do need to do regular batch data moves; i.e export data from
FMP, import into MySQL; and the other direction as well. My query
was of the "what's the best format for same?" ilk; do you use
CSV or XML or...?

I'll be writing to both of you for more specifics..

Actually, my product FmPro Migrator can provide some assistance for the
FileMaker to MySQL part of this task (see link below [$100]). For
transferring data back to FileMaker, I usually use a an import where I match
on a primary key.

From FileMaker 7 on, you can use the Insert SQL script step to
constrcut SQL queries...
