Default file share problem - 01-04-2007 , 09:37 AM

I've just installed a calendar program. However, when I open it in 8.5,
I get the following error message:

"Filemaker cannot share or be a client of a file because a networking
stack could not be initialized"

I get this for each of the four modules it opens and have to click
continue. The calendar then seems to work ok.

What is the file share problem it is talking about? This is a single
user environment(desktop) in windows xp pro sp2.

Check your XP firewall - SP2 likes to turn it on regardless if you are
running another wall.

SP2 also (it has been said) limits the number of simultaneous network
connections - sorry I forget what was said to be the limit... type:
netstat
at a command (DOS) prompt to see what you have taking up connections.

But, it really sounds (to me) like a firewall glitch.

But there is no networking. This is a destop single solution.
However, my xp firewall is off because I have a netopia router with
hardware firewall.
Do I need to ensure that a port is open in the firewall?

I don't think it is a firewall problem. I think the person who created this
file turned sharing on, but forgot to turn it of again

Load the file
Go to Menu > Edit > Sharing > FileMaker Network. Make sure it is off.
Do the same for ODBC and IWP under the same menu.

Did that solve it?

Didn't change anything. All three are turned off.
My main dB was turned on. Now everything is turned off.

The key phrase I bet is "FileMaker cannot share or BE A CLIENT of a file..."
You don't mention what company made the calendar solution but chances are
they have a network file reference in there... either by accident or as some
kind of "phone home" schema for copy protection/registration/updates.

I found the following faq that addresses the type of problem I'm having
on the filemaker web site. However, I'm not running a server, just a
desktop application. Was not attempting to share across network. But
this faq helped to eventually fix the problem.
---------------------
Filmaker FAQ:
"FileMaker cannot share or be a client of a file because the
networking stack could not be initialized." error when trying to
connect to shared files with FileMaker Pro.

Answer

APPLICABLE TO:
FileMaker Pro 8, FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced, FileMaker Pro 7, FileMaker
Developer 7, Windows

ISSUE:
I am having problems with a computer on my network not working with
FileMaker Pro. When I try to go to Open Remote, I am receiving the
following error

"FileMaker cannot share or be a client of a file because the networking
stack could not be initialized."

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling FileMaker Pro, but
it did not make a difference.

RESOLUTION:
Please check to make sure that your server.pem file [located in the
root folder of where FileMaker Pro/FileMaker Pro Advanced, i.e.
C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro 8] is around 5 KB.

If it's any smaller than that, then chances are that file is corrupt
and can cause this error message to appear. You may be able to copy
the server.pem file from a working FileMaker Pro 7 or 8 computer to the
computer exhibiting the issue and test.

If that is not the case, it appears that Winsock2 may be corrupted on
the computer and needs to repaired. Winsock2 is an API for applications
to utilize the Windows TCP/IP stack. "
------------------------------------------------
I also checked the Microsoft document and ran a program from their site
that checks the winsock2 for corruption. It was not corrupted.

I did discover that the server.pem file on my system was only 1KB.

I ran fmp installer again and told it to fix any problems. It removed
the server.pem file.

Still had the problem, each time the calendar was run, it would insert
another server.pem file of 1KB. Someone sent me a server.pem file of
6KB.

I moved the calendar program to another new folder, no server.pem file
present. Ran the application and the problem was gone. Never
installed the larger server.pem file.

I'm assuming that my initial install of fmp 8.5 set somehting up that I
don't know what. I was also having some different problems with files
that I had converted fom fmp 6 to 8.5.

I built new files for my db, imported the previously converted files
into new dB.

Now all works as should. The calendar program stopped having problems
once it was moved to another folder and the server.pem file was deleted
from the fmp 8.5 root directory.

GO figure.
