Default Field Frames in Find vs Browse Mode - 12-20-2009 , 02:01 PM

In FM10, does anyone know if there's a way to display the magnifying
glass that appears on fields in Find mode without also having to show
field frames when a record is active in Browse mode? The magnifying
glasses are helpful for users to distinguish Find mode from Browse
mode, but field frames can be distracting, particularly on layouts
with portals that have alternate background fill. I know one idea
would be to create a non-enterable container calculation that would
display a magnifying glass in Find mode and put it on every field, but
for a lot of reasons, this isn't a great solution. Any other
suggestions?

Thanks.

A Container Calculation Field won't work anyway since calculations aren't
performed in Find Mode ... this is so you can perform a Find using the
Calculation Field.

Your best option (if not the only one) is probably to make your own "Find"
structure (either using Find Mode or some Global Fields in browse Mode) and
create a specific Find Layout with the magnifying glass icon as simply a
graphic element next to each Field.

Yeah, you're right. I thought a container calculation defined as a
global value would evaluate correctly, something like, "If ( get
( windowmode ) = 1 , Home::gLookingGlass )" or whatever, but I tested
it and it doesn't work. Anyway it was a bad idea -- I don't want to
paste a global field a few dozen times on every layout; I've got
enough to do as it is.

As for the other idea, every layout offers a single-field search that
covers all the data in the table, but users who want more targeted
searches -- especially if they're coming from another FM database
where they got used to Ctrl-F -- like to use Find mode. Which is
totally cool; I was just hoping to be able to make use of the Find
iconography without having to show active field frames. Not a big
deal in the overall scheme.

Thanks for the tip, Harry.

Best,
-J.

Use conditional formatting and color your find fields yellow.

Grip - good thinking. Maybe not yellow, but something in that
ballpark. Thanks.
