Default exporting formatted text for a mail merge - 02-07-2007 , 05:02 AM

Hi all

I have searched here and Google and come up with no answers yet so I thought
I would add a post

I am setting up a database that users will be able to enter findings from
research interviews they carry out(who, where, when, and what was found
out). then once they have entered all the interviews they can export these
findings to a word report

at the moment I am exporting the database records to a txt file and running
a mail merge in word. however the text appears unformatted.

is there any way to retain the formatting

thanks in advance

Hi,
What database program do you use ?
I use FileMaker and I did a pretty thorough research on the subject and found (thanks to Erik) a solution with the use of some plugins - pretty convoluted though, that needs manual intervention each time it is done, but ... it works -.
By the way ANY database program I know of does the export in 'raw' text and never keeps formatting.

You can probably do the report directly in FileMaker, without exporting
to text at all. It is a matter of designing an appropriate layout for
the report.

Sorry I should of stated that I am using FM 8.5

but also that it has to be in word format as once these interviews are
exported they are passed to analyst to edit, add their thoughts to and add
tables and graphs to the document as well. this must all be in a word format
for the final client.

I just wondered if there was a way to set it to export the text as SVG or
CSS then to have something convert the coded text to formatted rich text in
word

another thought would be to print a FM report layout to PDF and then if any
one knows a good PDF to word converter.. that may be a way

any thoughts would be most appreciated
TIA
Craig
