Default email plugin for FM6 using Exchange and NOT SMTP - 02-09-2007 , 05:16 PM

We are running FM6.0v3 and need to find an email plugin. I've looked at a
few but they all seem to use the SMTP protocol. We have disabled that
protocol in our office because of security issues.

Can anyone point me to a suitalbe plugin?

You may not need a plug-in. FileMaker's own Send Mail command will send
emails using the computers own default email application ...
unfrotunately the catch is that the email applications can be
tempermental as to whether or not (and how) they work with this
command. Some don't work at all, others work fine, and yet others may
create emails but refuse to actuallly send them so you have to send
them manually.

I used successfully for a client the FMP plugin named 'iMailer' available at : http://www.datadesigns.com/products/products_im.htm
It works with FMP6 and FM8.
It uses its own 'brower' to receive and send mail.
One of its unique characteritics is that it is able to send what you put into your layout - or even several layouts in the same email - that can hold images, text and FM fields.
The technical support is very responsive.
I highly recommend it.

Millions of servers are offering SMTP services without any security
problems. Thus, the easiest way to solve your problems would be
reactivating the SMTP protocol and configuring your SMTP server in a
right way to only accept mails from hosts and/or users that shaöö be
granted rights to use the SMTP server as a relay.

Christian, Thanks for your feedback. You're right and I have asked our IT
group to provide me a secure way to use the SMTP protocol. Hopefully they
will not shut me down on this.

Harry, I agree on the temperamental issue. Also we want to be able to use MS
Publisher files as the body of the emails. Not sure the native email
commands can do that.

Remi, that looks like a cool product for some processes but not sure it will
do what we need. As stated above we'd like for the FM app to compose an
email and send it just as if it had been done with Outlook using a
MSPublisher file as the body.

Thanks
Steve
