Default Easy way to rename fields - 05-30-2005 , 12:31 PM

Dear group,

Is there an easy way to rename fields? I need to rename 1000+ fields
in a 6.0 Win database (50+ files).

Do you know of any plugin that might do it?

Thank you,

Fred

There are a few ways to achieve this. I presume when you say names that you
are referring to the field "labels". I also presume that many of the field
labels will be the same?

First idea
Create a new file call it Preferences. Set up a series of global fields
(text). Name them GlobLab1; GlobLab2; GlobLab3 etc. Use these global
fields to rename your field names, e.g. Contacts, Companies, Invoices etc.

Create a Field Calculation number = 1. Call it say "DCL". (Data Channel
Link)

Create the same field DCL (calc number)= 1 in each of your 50 files. You may
have this already.

Create relationships based on DCL=DCL in each file of the 50 with the new
preference file.

You can now use the new global fields from preferences to name any field you
wish.

Hope that makes sense.

Dear R.,

Thank you for your reply.

When I say names I mean what is defined under Field Name in the Define
fields dialog box.

I am upgrading to vesion 7. I inherited a database from somebody else
and I do not really understand the naming convention (it is terrible).
Before upgrading, I would like to rename fields according to the more
or less standard FileMaker naming conventions. However, doing so for
1000+ fields is a nighmare unless there is and easy plugin or
technique that would allow me to, for instance:

- Do search and replace
- Rename several identically named fields in different databases at
one

Is there any plugin or technique available?

Fred

BTW: I have a preferences file, and what you call DCL, but I do not
see how it can help me in this renaming task.

Fred

Sorry my idea was not clear enough. There is another posting below which
may suit you better than my suggestion. I repeat it here for your
consideration. If not let me know and I'll try again.

Robert (see below for copy posting)

FmPro Migrator 3.46 Enterprise Edition from .com Solutions Inc. ($100) has
been updated to add the Drag and Drop conversion of FileMaker 5/6 files.
Dropping one ore more FileMaker 5 or FileMaker 6 database files onto FmPro
Migrator instantly reads the metadata from each FileMaker database file and
creates migration scripts. Database migrations can be done from FileMaker
5/6 to FileMaker 7, or any one of 8 other databases including MySQL, Oracle
(8, 8i-9i, 10g), Access, SQL Server, Sybase, DB2, PostgreSQL and FrontBase.
This new Drag and Drop interface improves the performance and accuracy of
FileMaker metadata retrieved by FmPro Migrator compared to either ODBC or
AppleScript APIs. For instance, a 2600 field test file which previously took
2 minutes 25 seconds to process via AppleScript, now takes only 16 seconds
with the new Drag and Drop interface.

Existing FmPro Migrator Enterprise Edition customers may upgrade to FmPro
Migrator 3.46 Enterprise Edition at no charge. FmPro Migrator is available
for MacOS X and Windows (functional demo available). For more info please
