Yes. Use a Pop-Up Menu instead of a Drop Down List.

Or just goto layout mode. select field, right-click and choose Field Control
/ Setup > disable the check box "include edit item"

But with a drop down list, you are still able to enter non-list values
into the field. The edit checkbox prevents you from changing the
value list itself.

Not quite.

Go into Define field. highlite the proper field. select options. go to the
validation tab. Disable the checkbox allow override AND
enable checkbox Member of value list, choose the correct value list from the
dropdown.

Now you can go back to the layout and select drop-down list WITHOUT being
able to enter non existant values.

The problem is that I want the user not to be able at all to type in the
field.

The way I told you, a user can NOT type in the field, only choose from
existing values.

Sorry, but I have also tested your recommendation, and a user can still type
in the field if he/she wants to.
What I did notice is that if you disable the option "Include arrow to show
and hide list...", it will be more difficult for user to type in the field
by accident (it can still be done if the user tries harder).
Also, checking the Field Control -> Behavior -> "Select entire contents of
field on entry" may help prevent accidental typing into the Drop-down box.

One thing I'm not sure how to disable is being able to press SHIFT to select
more than one option in a Drop-down Control and Pop-up Control. I think even
the Radio Button Control has that problem.
By programming standards, a Radio Button should only allow ONE option to be
selected.

The good news is that selecting multiple options doesn't work over Instant
Web Publishing.

Thanks,

They can type in the field, they just can't exit with those values in

By 'Value List' I mean a 'Pop Up Menu'.
