Default Developers in UK for FileMaker - 11-26-2006 , 09:01 AM

Hi

I work for a household removal company based in the UK. We have recently
purchased FileMaker Pro 8.5 Advanced in the belief that we would be able to
create a system similar to that we have developed over the past 15 years on
the Apple Mac with a application called OMNIS5.

The OMNIS5 solution we have produced has served us well over the years, but
runs under the old classic environment of our Apple Mac. With this in mind
and the problems we experienced earlier in the year with sourcing a printer
which would operate under Mac Classic we decided to look for a native Mac OS
X database. It was decided that FileMaker would most likely be a good
replacement.

The current OMNIS5 solution we use is used for many of our administration
tasks. This includes recording of clients personal contact data, entering of
quotations, issuing of accounts of accepted quotes and other accounts for
sundries etc, maintenance of storage clients for issuing of rental charges
etc, including chasing of unpaid accounts etc, entry of monies received,
calculation of weekly turnover from this same data, entry of expense
information (ie accounts received from our suppliers), expenses analysis and
calculation of VAT returns all from this same data.

Unfortunately, I am finding FileMaker to be a difficult beast to come to
grips with. The flexibility of OMNIS5 just does not seem to be available in
FileMaker to enable me to rewrite the current system we use.

The purpose of this message is to enquire if there are FileMaker developers
here in the UK that are able to assist us in the development of a system.

I'm not in the UK but it sounds like a fun project. I'm sure there are
plenty of people willing to help you. However, are you expecting a bunch of
folks to post their responses publicly to the newsgroup? Because both your
originating email and the email at the bottom of your list are the same, and
you indicate NOT to reply to that email address, because it isn't read.

Oops !!

Sorry bit of a boo boo there !!

I agree with your comments and shall keep an eye on the
jeff (AT) jeffwright (DOT) demon.co.uk mailbox, thanks for pointing that out. I use a
different mailbox normally due to the problems of SPAM.

I just wish I had more time to spend on FileMaker, as it certainly looks
good, but needs a great deal of work to get to something that we shall be
able to use.

Thanks,

You might also try poking around the Filemaker UK site:

http://fsa.filemaker.co.uk/

While I don't see any firms specializing in removals (what we in the US call
house moving), what you describe should not be too tough to build as a
custom solurion.

If you have no luck locally, you might try non-local developers; I'm not
hearing anything that says you ever have to meet the developer. Widening
your search might come in particularly handy if you are looking for someone
with Omnis experience.
