Default Creating a form? - 03-25-2007 , 11:34 AM

I have Filemaker 8.5 pro. I have printed form that I load into my printer
and I would like to be able to use the image in FM to properly place the
fields so when they print everything will line up. If possible I would like
to have the printed form as the background and fill in the necessary fields.
Then when I print the information I don't want the background to print.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Carl

I guess you may have two layouts one to show and to be filled in, and one
hidden - a copy of the first one with only the fields at their place - you
use for printing. You then launch the printing by script.

Put a PDF of the form in a container field (Insert Picture).

Put that field on a layout (use the "Crop" setting to get it exact full size). Size the layout tight to the form field vertically. Under Format/Set Sliding/Printing, set the container to "Do not print selected objects.

Put your data fields in position in front of the container image.

Fiddle with alignment as necessary.

Print it.

Matt

Put a PDF or other scanned image of the form in a (maybe Global?) container field (Insert Picture).

Place that field on a layout (use the Crop setting in Format/Graphic, so you can get close to original size). Under Format/Set Sliding/Printing, set the field to "Do not print selected objects." Size the layout tight vertically to the field.

Place your data fields in front of the image.

Fiddle with positions, sizing and alignment as necessary.

Print.

Matt

Well, I have answered this twice in close to identical language, and it has not shown up for me yet. Perhaps a problem with the Verizon news server? I'll apologize for duplications.

Of course you don't need to use a Container field. You can just insert
the image directly onto the layout. The only problem may be that a
print-resolution image may balloon the file size of you database (a
Container field can link to the original image and so not store it in
the database file itself).

Since you've already got the form, you could use the image only
temporarily to position the fields (although they will still need
positional tweaking after test printouts). You could also use a
screen-resolution image simply to make the layout look the same as the
form. Either way you can set the image to not be printed using the
Sliding / Printing options.

Harry,

This filebloating is not an issue any more. 7&8 handle this much better then
previous versions. I have made some trials and have comfirmed this to be
true, not just commercial talk.

Keep well, Ursus
