Default Create from Base - 10-23-2006 , 08:16 AM

Hello Group,

I inherited a database built in FMP v8.0 consisting of 8 tables.

Trying to "fix up" the system has proven far too difficult so I've
decided to try & rewrite the entire database.

I made a base table with most of the field definitions I think I will
need. Now I'm not sue how to transform this initial table into the 7
that are left without being forced to change all of the calculation
fields & (self) references to the name of the new table.

I am using v 8.5.

Thanks in advance.

The question is -- why are the other tables so similar that you would be
replicating so many of the fields?

A properly normalized database would have very distinct information in each
table. If you're rebuilding from scratch, now is the time to enforce proper
database structure.

Bill,

Thanks for your rapid response.

There are certain "features" that I would normally put in most of my
tables :

- Highlighting a word in a find

- Record navigation : next, previous, first, last

- Layout navigation : form screen, list, table screens

- Scripts : if nothing found, etc.

I wanted to avoid writing these basics for each database - is that a
bad idea ?

Thank again,

Geo.

In 7/8 files, scripts are more universal to all tables. You will be
able to call them where you need them. Through ver5/6 I thought I knew
Filemaker. With ver8 I feel like a novice again. So much.

No; Although you might pursue a "separation model" in which these functions
are required only within an "Interface" table and not within the others.

I'm not sure if FM Robot would help but it might be worth a look.
