Default Converting db 2.1 MAC to 8.5 PC - 11-08-2006 , 10:06 AM

How difficult is to convert a simple database in fmp 2.1 mac to version
8.5 on the PC?

Can somebody explain me the best way to do it?

You have to convert it (extension 'fm' in PC) first into FMP3 or 4 (fp3
extension on PC) then into FMP5 or 6 (fp5 extension on PC). That's easy. I
can do that for you if yous send me your file(s).
But conversion from FMP6 to FM7-8 is another thing. Generally speaking it is
better to rewrite the whole thing to use the new features of FM7-8.5.
So, if you wish, I wait for your files (here is my real email address). At
minimum I'll give you you the XXX.fp5 files.

PS : I have every intermediate versions of FMP. But do you have FMP6 on PC ?

Ithought Ver5/6 could open/convert 2? And I agree.. ver8x is soooo
much better it is worth a re-write.

You should be convert 2.1 directly to 6-- they will convert just like
Filemaker 3 or 4 files convert.

If your files are relatively simple, you can then convert them straight to
8.5; if they are more complex, it may still make sense to 'migrate' them,
but some extra work, both pre-flight and and on the 8.5, will be required.
Large, complex systems are often (but not necessarily) better off re-written
from scratch, but the final choice can only be made on a case-by-case basis.

Nonetheless, given the fact that 2.1 was non-relational, and you describe it
as 'simple', you should be able to go straight through to 8.5. You will need
first to stop at 6.
