Default Changing fonts - 07-28-2003 , 04:48 AM

I have some filemaker files running across a win95 network.

Every now and then someone reboots the PC where the files live while the
files are open on another PC.

Twice I have had to "recover" the files and while they run fine, the fonts
have changed eg from times to arial.

One of them is very dependent on appearance and has heaps of layouts - is
there a reason and/or solution to this.

PS I had a proper backup so it is an annoyance and curiosity rather than a
crisis.

Thanks

David

One suggestion would be to yell at anyone who reboots the computer
without properly shutting down. Another suggestion would be to move the
hosting to a computer that nobody has any right touching. Or better,
get FileMaker Server and put that on a dedicated machine.

And since the above suggestions are sometimes just not feasible for some
very small companies or non-profits, I'll offer you this:

I used to see similar problems quite often when I was using FMP 4.x on a
Windows 95 box that didn't have as much memory as it probably should
have. I haven't seen such problems in years, though. By upgrading to
Windows XP, you will likely avoid any need for reboots, but you will
definitely need more memory to run it. And if you aren't yet up to at
least FMP 5.x, then I would highly recommend updating there too. I'm
not sure which deficiency was the root of my font problems, but they
definitely went away after upgrading to Win98, FMP 5.x and more memory.

Thanks Howard
First I'll yell at myself - it was actually me that did the re-booting
Second, I have FMP4, 5 and 6 - Just for some reason I haven't upgraded some
files... I will do so now.
Thanks very much
