Default Can't burn databases to CD (server 7) - 12-07-2005 , 09:06 PM

I have FileMaker Pro Server 7 on an iMac G5 running 10.4. Today I tried
to burn copies of several FMPro 7 databases to a CD from my server.

I closed the databases first, dragged copies to the CD-R, then gave the
Burn command.

It said they couldn't be burned to the CD because of an error. I don't
have the exact wording, but there wasn't an error number or description.

I assumed at the time it was some kind of permissions problem, but I
don't see anything in the documentation about that.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? I guess maybe it could be a bad
CD, although it's brand new and doesn't appear scratched. I didn't have
time to see if it would let me burn other files onto it, but I guess
that's the next thing to try (besides trying a different CD for the
databases).

Thanks for any leads.

Amanda

I've had problems with several types of files where an application hasn't
"let go" of them completely after quitting. Restarting Windows usually
clears this up.

Make sure the files are on a local disk, not networked. Restart the PC, and
try again. Should work, provided they fit on the CD and that you have enough
free space on your boot volume.

Amanda,

Assuming the files weren't actually in use at the time, there is no FM
related reason you shouldn't be able to burn fm7 database files to a CD.

I expect you'll find your solution elsewhere... be it problems with the
CD, the OS, or otherwise.

Good Luck sorting this out.

Just a guess, but when you say "closed the databases" do you mean you
actually quit from FileMaker Server or simply closed windows that were
on-screen??

Closing windows may not actually close the database files - if there is
a relationship link in another window further down the pile then the
"closed" file will be re-opened as hidden.

It's best to make sure nobody is connected / using the database, quit
from FileMaker Server and THEN backup the files.

Thanks for everyone's responses. To Harry: I am closing the databases
with the Close All Databases command through the FileMaker Server Admin
program.

To Ray: I'm going to try burning a copy. Haven't done that yet.

It sounds like this may not be a FileMaker problem (thanks Dave).

If it does turn out to be FileMaker-related, I'll post back here.

Thanks again,

Amanda
