Default Can you automatically format a field to display as hypertext? - 12-04-2003 , 11:35 PM

Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to automatically make the data in
certain fields display as hypertext when browsed or previewed as a
merge field or something else.

For example, when viewing an e-mail address, clicking on it would
launch the default email program and set up a new message to the
address. Or clicking on a company webpage field would open the
webpage in the default browser.

Anyone know?

Thanks!
Andrew

Not automatically. If you have proper protocols within your field data
(i.e. your field has "mailto:test (AT) test (DOT) com" in it), users can
right-click in it and have the option to 'open' it. This, in effect,
opens a browser or email window for you. I believe this is a FMP6
option only.

As an alternative, I often put a non-enterable copy of the email field
on the layout, color it blue and format it as underlined, and then
connect it to a script that performs the Send Mail step. Another option
in this regard would be to leave the field enterable, but turn the field
'label' into a clickable 'link'.

Don't know if you can have it formatted to appear as a link, but you can open
a URL or launch the default email program for an email address in a field.
The method detailed in the Filemaker Pro Help topic "using URLs in a field"
and it involves making sure your internet preference files for Win or Mac
are set up for this, and then just right-clicking (win) or control-clicking (mac)
and chosing "open".

HTH,

Enid
