Default Calculation on Server? - 05-22-2007 , 07:39 AM

Is there a way to make FileMaker Calculation on Server instead to make
them on FileMaker clients? My goal is to speed up clients that connect
trough 640M/bit DSL, and for wath I can understand, the main problem is
that all calculation are done by client, so if I must sum a field of
50000 record, all 50000 value will be passed to client that make the
sum. It's a no sense at all: local host can do this in a moment, and
pass only the result to client.
I hope you understand what I mean.
In the worse case, I'm thinking to convert all calculation fields in
text/number, install a filemaker pro on server and use scripts to make
calculations... Has someone done somthing like this? Better ideas?

Set up a terminal server.

FM performance over WANs is poor. FM Pro is not a 'thin' client. With
FM7/8/8.5 its gotten thinner than it once was, but its still a thick
client, and it moves a lot of data around.

There *are* things you can do to optimize it, in terms of layout
design, graphics design, field design, etc, but its never going to be
"great".

If you want it to be "great" - go with a terminal server and/or
citrix. Its simple and, requires no extra development effort.
Licesning can add up, but it usually pays for itself in terms of
better performance & productivity.

The other 'good' alternative is to look at making it web based. This
is a lot of extra work if you need more than what can be done with
"Instant Web Publishing".

-cheers,
Dave

If you're going to put FileMaker Pro on the server, use a virtual machine so
you won't have conflicts with TCP ports and whatnot.
